Kilimanjaro Diary: Camp One

Woke up at hotel 6.30 a.m. Struggled to get to sleep and at breakfast everyone else said they’d had sleep problems.

After repacking several times my kit weighed 15 kg (woohoo) so it was loaded on to the bus.

Three hours later we arrived at the gate and sat for hours waiting for the porters to get ready.

We finally set for Kili at 3.00 p.m.

The walk was a reasonable pace and what should have been 3 – 5 hours took us 2 hours.

Marc was the first to report a headache and then we all started to feel something.

A few briefings followed – the chemical toilet and plan for tomorrow.

We had dinner – boiled potatoes and vegetables. Everyone seemed to be having seconds and thirds, although I didn’t want anything after the first plate.

I have been drinking loads and peeing loads. We have been recommended to drink four to five litres of liquid a day.

We are in small tents which many people are surprised about.

I am a little worried about when it gets really cold my sleeping bag’s stuffing is all over the place, leaving some parts without filling. Apparently tomorrow might well be zero degrees.

I miss Mayrav terribly – and just thinking of home makes my eyes water, it’s only day one really.

I have tried texting home but there is not enough phone signal to send a text – I will try again tomorrow.
